Shri Dattatreya Hosabale, Saha Sarakaryavah, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has written a short memoir on his mother Smt. Meenakshi Amma, who died today (12.12.2013).

My beloved mother Smt Meenakshi Amma, 87, died today, 12 Dec 2013 at 11:30 am at a hospital in Shimoga, Karnataka.

She was quite hale and healthy till yesterday. Two days back she was deeply shocked and distressed to see a drunken woman fallen in the street. She developed breathing problem and vomiting. My eldest brother rushed her to hospital yesterday. The doctors advised endoscopy which was to be done today. But, as pulse rate dropped sharply and breathing problem continued endoscopy was dropped.

All these years of ripe age my mother did not require any personal assistance, and was aware of on goings around- the local happenings to national political developments! She was regularly reading news paper. She had expressed her deep anguish and sorrow over the recent deaths of Nelson Mandela and Scion of Mysore Royal family Srikantha Datta Narsimharaja Wodeyar. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years, she had expressed joy saying that he had suffered a lot for his people!

She had multifarious interests in life. Knitting, gardening, cooking were her natural inclinations.  Rural medicine was her special foray. She was administering many home medicines to a large number of people. She evinced great interests in socio-political affairs and issues and offered her opinions. Travel was her favourite. She liked meeting people of all kinds- relatives, friends, domestic servants, new persons of all age group. Always her heart was moved with compassion for the needy and the suffering.

Loved by a large number of people for her concern and affection, she will be remembered for long.

She never went to a school, but learnt letters both Kannada and English (Roman) at home by her own efforts. She was not away from technology even: she tried to know through demo the computer, kindle reader, skype etc including how a pen drive works. She had an ambition to drive a car!

From her own earnings through many handicrafts, she got gold ornaments made for family kith and kin and gifted them the same.

Smt Meenakshi Amma, born in 1916, was second wife to Shri Seshagiriyappa of Hosabale village in Shimoga Dist., Karnataka. She is survived by three sons and four daughters and a huge number of relatives and admirers.

The last rites will be held tomorrow 13 Dec at 9 am at Sorab, Shimoga Dist.

  1. Deep Condolences on sudden demise of Smt Meenakshi Amma,
After reading this blog, memories of my grandmother, came alive; who was of similar nature watching Samachar in DD everyday and ready to explore new things at an advanced age. It’s painful, when dearest one leaves mortal body for heavenly abode. The sudden separation creates a vacuum in our life. However it is a blessing, when there is less suffering due to old age.
May Lord Tirupati give you strength to overcome this loss.
